St. Patrick’s Day
Saint Patrick’s Day is right around the corner—are you ready for the festivities?
Saint Patrick’s Day, or perhaps more commonly known as St. Patty’s Day, is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated all across the globe on March 17th of every year. This holiday commemorates Saint Patrick, perhaps the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.
Saint Patrick’s Day is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. St. Patty’s Day was made an official holiday in the early 17th century, and has gradually become less of a religious holiday and more of a celebration of Irish culture in general.
Today, St. Patrick’s Day is quite possibly the most widely celebrated saints’ day in the world. Even though it is not a legal holiday anywhere in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is still widely recognized and celebrated throughout the country. Celebrations include prominent displays of the color green, feasts, numerous parades, and, of course, copious consumption of alcohol.
